After confirming that all the necessary pieces are there, follow these steps to set-up and play the game. First take one spring ring and put it around one end of the distance chain like you would put a key on a key ring. Take the other spring ring and put it around the other end of the distance chain. Flip the carpet tops over so the carpet is facing down. There are four small holes on the bottom of the playing board. These holes are where the support legs attach. The chain is used to set the proper game board playing distance. Each end of the chain attaches to one leg on each of the game boards. Place a spring ring over the shortest end of each leg. Align the support legs with the holes on the bottom of the board and push down firmly. Take the opposing leg and put it in the holes on the opposite side of board and push down firmly. You now have one leg with a distance chain attached and one leg without a chain attached on the same board. Repeat this process on other board. Take the Wa-shoo catch pouch and place it over the center hole in the playing board and slide the lock collar until it is snug on the outside of hole. Flip the boards over and you are ready to play. After you have finished playing remove the legs from the bottom of each of the boards and slide the tops into the carrying case. The legs, distance chain, score stick and Wa-Shoos will all fit into the carrying case.
Official Rules for Gameplay of Wa-Shoos
Wa-Shoos is a tossing game that can be played with 2 or 4 players. If playing with 2 players, both players toss from the same end and move to the opposite board after each turn. They then toss their Wa Shoos back toward the opposite board. Continuing this process until one player reaches 21 points.
If playing with 4 players (2 players per team) there is one player per team on each end. Each player tosses toward their team-mate until one team reaches 21 points. To determine which player or team goes first “coin toss” a Wa-Shoo using the side with the logo as heads and the plain side as tails. After the game has started the player or team that scored the last good point tosses first. (A good point is when your score moves forward toward 21.)
Each player will toss all three Wa-Shoos or as many of the three as they choose. Then the next player will toss. At times throughout the game a player may decide not to toss all three Wa-Shoos.
Example: One player or team may be at 19 points and has just tossed two onto the board playing surface. At this point, no additional points are needed to win the game. Or possibly the opponent has a Wa-Shoo hanging precariously close to the center hole and you do not want to take the chance of knocking it in. Once a player decides to not throw all their Wa-Shoos and their opponent begins to toss their Wa-Shoos the first player’s turn is over.
Wa-Shoo points are scored by being on the board surface or by going into the center hole. Points are scored on the top of the board by being closer to the hole than your opponent. Each Wa-Shoo can score either 1 point or 3 points. If a Wa-shoo lies anywhere on the top surface of the board, this is 1 point. A Wa-shoo tossed into the center hole is scored 3 points. The Wa-Shoos on the top of the board are scored by the closest to the hole. For example: If your opponent has three Wa-Shoos on the top of the board and you toss and get one closer to the hole you would receive 1 point. If your opponent has tossed two Wa-Shoos into the hole and on your toss you also throw one into the hole your opponent would have scored only 3 points. The last player to toss can cancel the first player's points by tossing closer to the hole, on top of the existing opponent’s Wa-shoo(s), or by tossing directly into the hole.
Example: Your opponent has two Wa-Shoos on the board and one is three inches from the edge of the hole and the other is five inches from the edge of the hole. You toss your Wa-Shoos and you get one four inches from the edge of the hole. Your opponent would have scored only 1 point. Lets use the same scenario only instead of you getting one four inches from the edge of the hole you toss one directly into the hole. That would have canceled the opponent’s Wa-Shoos that were lying on the top of the board and given you 3 points.
How to Win
A player or team must go out exactly on 21 points. Example: A player or team score is at 19 and a Wa-shoo is thrown directly into the center hole. As this throw is scored as 3 points, the total score would then be 22. As you are not allowed to score above the 21 points for the win, this 3 point toss would actually be subtracted from the current score. This would set that team or player back to a score of 16 points. (19 – 3 = 16) Using the scenario above for your opponent's position. Let's say your score is at 18, and you are tossing first in this round of play. You may choose to toss because if you can throw one Wa-Shoo into the hole you will potentially win with a score of 21. If your opponent then throws one into the hole on this same round, this cancels your 3 point score and sets you back to your original 18 points. If your opponent is throwing first then the strategies are reversed or similar. You may have the opportunity to cancel your opponent’s Wa-Shoo that is lying on the game board or in the hole. On your next toss a Wa-Shoo in the hole would give you 21 points and the win. Many different scenarios are possible and a player or team who uses the best strategy to either hold their opponent on a difficult number (19 or 20) or to pass their throw and let there opponent go over 21 points will be the most successful.
